Essay #1: Character Sketch

  • Think of a person you have seen over the years and had the opportunity to observe.
  • What has intrigued you about him or her, caught your attention?
  • What kind of car does the person drive?
  • What is the person’s dog like?
  • How would you describe the person’s house or workplace?
  • What makes this person unique and valuable?
  • With whom and what is this person surrounded?
  • Brainstorm a list of details that help bring this person to life.

The above set of questions is not intended as a blueprint for your paper, but rather help with brainstorming. Please don’t answer the questions in a list; that’s not an essay. Use the model essay to guide you in the way you structure your paper. Here is the page for the model essay: Sample Character Sketch

Note that each paragraph in the model is about the same size, and each paragraph logically springs from the paragraph before it. Make sure you have at least five paragraphs, but avoid any five paragraph formula.

Your character sketch should be 2-3 pages long. Get at various aspects that define the person’s character. Perhaps most importantly, include how this person helps you understand yourself and your place at this time in this world.
