Research and find an application of either a shift register or a counter. Counter systems are all around you everyday. For purposes of this discussion, you can include mechanical counters. These types of counters still exist. Although they are being replaced by digital electronic counters. Please don't use traffic lights as an example.

Counter is a basic building blocks of many real life appliance used in day to day life, for example in kitchen where microwave is used to cook food in which temperature is set for heating at that time counter installed in that counter counts internally increase or decrease in temperature and as per requirement it increases or decreases the temperature.

In washing machine counter counts time at which it operates.

Other applications like in stadium or auditorium in which counter increases for every entering person and decreases for every person leaving.

It is used in frequency counter, digital clocks, analogue to digital converter etc.

If we consider shift register, which is used to store temporary data in microprocessor or microcontroller, as a delay line in which processes is delayed by some fixed interval, Serial to parallel data conversion etc.

There are many applications, we can say that in almost every application we can find counter, which is basically used for counting signal data or any other objects.
