Solutions

Expert Solution

Calcium is one of the most important mineral that is required for human beings. It is the main constituent of bones and teeth. Its deficiency can lead to dental problems, osteoporosis etc. In addition to this, calcium has many other roles. It stimulates muscle contraction in skeletal and cardiac muscle by reacting with actin and myosin, the muscle fibres thereby provides support to the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system. Calcium is also important in nerve transmission by trigerring the neurotransmitters which are stored in the nerve cells. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmits signals from one neuron to other which includes acetylcholine, dopamine and all. Another function of calcium is in blood coagulation. Along with vitamin K, calcium also helps in clot formation and prevents excessive blood loss.

In the given question, options A, B and C are major actions of calcium as mentioned above. So the correct answer for this question is option D (causes fluid retention) which is not an action of calcium. Studies have found that taking calcium supplements will reduce the risk of fluid retention.
