Identify the rates of prevalence of puberty rituals
across cultures, and explain the function of these
rituals
THIS IS ACTUALLY PSYCHOLOGY
To mark the attainment of puberty many rituals are found in most of the traditional cultures across the world compared to the western cultures. Mostly the menarche is marked with several rituals and customs, the studies show that 68% of the traditional cultures had rituals for boys, and 79% of the traditional cultures had rituals for girls.
In almost all cultures these rituals are meant to adapt girls to the stringent life style in their reproductive age, as the blood of menstruation is feared and bear negative influence in most of these cultures, and also, to make women adhere to existing cultural norms regarding their sexuality.. whereas, the attainment of puberty in boys is displayed by involving them in various power performances, and activities that involve aggressive behavior. This infuses the cultural expectation regarding their gender role. Thus, these cultural rituals regarding puberty celebrates the attainment of reproductive capacity in men and women, and also, teaches them what is expected from them regarding their sexuality in their culture.
