Which of the three complement pathways will be activated? Why? ( compare between people tested positive for COVID-19 with symptoms and people tested positive for COVID-19 without symptoms )

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans 1- Lectin complement pathway will be activated.

Since the N proteins of Sara CoV bind to MASP-2 , which is the key serine protease in the lectin pathway of complement activation, resulting in aberrant complement activation and aggravated inflammatory lung injury.

Ans 2- (a)- People tested positive with COVID-19 with symptoms - They have symptoms which include fever, body ache , dry cough , fatigue, chills , headache , sore throat, loss of appetite, and loss of smell . More severe symptoms include high fever, severe cough, shortness of breath.

People tested positive with COVID-19 without symptoms- 80% of infections are mild or asymptomatic .The risk of catching COVID-19 from no symptoms at all is very low. This is particularly true at the early stages of disease. This is because symptoms are actually a side effect of fighting off an infection . So it takes a little time for immune system to rally that defense , so some cases are asymptomatic even after being positive.
