ESO was founded in march 2004 with an aim to protect and conserve Oman's national heritage.It helps to educate , raise awarness and enable public involvement in conservation efforts for Oman's ecosystem.Its main works include-
1.To reduce the use of plastic bags
Plastic bags are used at all retail outlets in Oman and often unnecessarily.Costumers rarely say No to the bags and staffs behind the counters unaware of the environmental concerns.ESO encourages people to begin to use reusable plastics.It has started many campaigns to educate the families about the ill effects of plastic bags
2.Native tree planning
This project aims not only to plant native trees,but to engage volunteers and raise awarness of the importance of planting native trees.The campagin focused on the Dhofer region which is home to more than 800 of the 1200 native Omani plant species and faces desertification , overgrazing and invasion of alien plant species.Through this campaign ESO has built long standing relationships with the local communities, officials, volunteers,schools,universities and colleges
3.Capacity building programs
It's aim to develop capacity buildings for Omanis in the field of environmental conservation.Since 2012, ESO has speedily been making progress in the area of capacity building.Every year seven Omanis are hired and trained giving ESO the much needed support and administrative assistance regarding capacity building programs
4.Tirtle conservation
This project is based mainly on Masirah Island and focuses on loggerhead turtles as it's numbers are gradually decreasing at an alarming rate.ESO gives awarness presentation to general public and students on Masirah island emphasizing on the threats to marine turtles and their habitats.Awarness workshops have also been given regarding sustainable fishing
Some other remarkable projects taken by ESO to save the ecosystems of Oman are Earth hour, ECO-THON, Whale and dolphin projects,Turtle Bycatch research etc.
