Acme Biotech requires all new employees to undergo a drug test screening.   As part of the collection process, key donor information is entered on a form referred to as the “Non-Federal Four-Part Drug Testing Custody and Control Form”. To test the effectiveness of the process, managers review randomly selected forms. It has been determined from earlier studies that six typical types of mistakes or errors are made when completing the form. Assume each Control Form represents one “unit”, and then calculate the following attribute quality measures:

  1. Defects per unit (dpu)
  1. Defects per opportunity (dpo)
  1. Defects per million opportunities (dpmo)
  1. Sigma capability (σcap)

Solutions

Expert Solution

6 types of mistakes(defects) are there and we have to consider each control form as one "unit".hence there are total 21 units.

And count of all 6 types of mistakes is "15"(# of defects)

a) Defects per unit (DPU)

-- is number of defects(mistakes) divided by total number of units=(15/21)= 0.714286

b) Defects per opportunity (DPO)

-- is stated as total # of defects by total # of units = (15/21)= 0.714286

we can see that DPU and DPO both are same they are just different terminologies but have same meaning here.

c) Defects per million opportunities (DPMO)

-- is just the conversion of DPU or DPO per 1,000,000 (one million) units.

hence,DPMO=DPO*1000000= 0.714286*1000000 =0.714286*10^6 = 714286 in a million.

Hence there are 714286 defects in 1 million

d)Sigma capability (σcap):-

From DPMO we can calculate sigma by looking into the six sigma conversion tables.

So for here we need to look into value near to our DPMO value in table for sigma which is

see below snapshot-

the highlighted value.

here sigma cap= 0.9 and it will give 28 % yeild.

Matwirth corporation has instituted a new disciplinary policy for employees who fail a random drug test. The personnel office wishes to test to see if there is a difference in employee behavior based on the new policy. The records of 500 employee drug tests from before the new policy were randomly selected and 500 drug test results from after the new policy were also randomly selected. In the sample from before the new policy, 1.80% tested positive, while 1.40% in...

The Food and Drug Administration uses a premanufacturing screening program for determining the marketability of new pharmaceutical products, whereas the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission relies on recall actions for products found to be defective, such as electric coffee-makers that short out. Can you think of any rationale other than historical accident for the difference in regulatory approaches between the two agencies? (Chp. 22)

10.  HYPOTHESIS ABOUT DIFFERENCE IN PROPORTIONS Suppose the Acme Drug Company develops a new drug, designed to prevent colds. The company states that the drug is less effective on seniors than on children. To test this claim, they choose a simple random sample of 80 seniors and 70 children. At the end of a whole year, 16 of the seniors caught a cold; and 11 of the children caught a cold. Based on these findings, can we conclude that the drug...

Acme is considering a new project that requires an investment of $100 million in machinery. This is expected to produce earnings before interest and taxes of $16 million per year for 4 years. The machinery will be fully depreciated to a zero-book value over 4 years using straight-line depreciation. Working capital costs are negligible. The tax rate is 25%. The unlevered cost of capital is 13%. They have a target debt ratio (debt/value) for the firm of 45%. Joker plans...
