how do you put the equation in the calculator for PH or POH

Expert Solution

Hi we know the relationships

pH = -log(H+) and pOH = -log(OH-)

H+ and OH- are hydrogen ion concentration and hydroxyl ion concentration respectively. Concentration should be in moles only.

Sample Question: Calculate pH of 0.001 M HCl.

Procedure: Volume is not given hence molarity = moles (we have to assume the volume is 1 liter)

concentration = 0.001 M = 0.001 moles (since molarity = moles/liter)

pH = -log(H+) = negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration = -log(0.001) = 3

so pH = 3

1. In calculator press "minus" sign, next press "log" a open bracket appears as -log(

2. now enter the value 0.001, next press ) button, final press on equality symbol "=" it gives the required result.

The same process is also applicable to calculate pOH also, but finally you have to convert pOH into pH by using the following equality relationship.

pH + pOH = 14    ==> pH = 14 - pOH
