Microbiological nature of corona virus

Corona virus causes human colds and common respiratory diseases in many other animals including livestock, poultry and laboratory rodent. The causative agent for this first identified was novel beta coronavirus of the same subgenus as SARS-CoV and named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Corona viruses are grouped in the family Coronaviridae and the two groups of human corona viruses are 229E-like and OC43-like.

Structurally the corona virus virions are spherical to pleomorphic enveloped particles. Envelope contains projecting glycoproteins, surrounds a core with a matrix protein which is enclosed with in positive sense single stranded RNA associated with nucleoprotein. Glycoproteins helps in attachment to the host cell and carries main antigenic epitopes and the OC43 possesses a haemagglutinin. Pathogenicity of coronavirus is explained as they are airborne transmission through droplets to the nasal mucosa. It also transmitted by animals. After infection, the antibodies against these virus are seen in the serum and nasal secretions. It have the incubation period of 3 days after that it will cause some symptoms like common cold with sneezing, runny nose etc.

Laboratory diagnosis is done on the basis of antibody titers in paired sera. It is so difficult to Isolate this virus. Culturing of Virus can be done from nasal swabs or washings by inoculating organ cultures of human fetal or nasal tracheal epithelium. ELISA test is done by collected paired sera, for a rise in antibodies against OC43 and 229E. Nucleic acid hybridisation tests like PCR are now introduced. It cannot treated by vaccines or specific drugs.Mainly this viruses are controlled through the symptomatic treatment.
