Janice is a 56 years old mother of two teenagers she complains of difficulty sleeping and staying up all night with a burst of energy. She has been cleaning her house for the past 2 nights non –stop. You also notice that her speech is marked by a flight of ideas, when she is admitted, she is heard telling her roommate that she wishes that she could kill herself because she is tired of living like this. Discuss the probable DSM-V diagnosis that she is experiencing. Explain what would be the priority nursing diagnosis and included in her plan of care containing both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
Step 1
56 years old Janice is experiencing a major sleeping disorder and her difficulty in sleeping and staying up all night can be a serious health concern. Since she is sleepless for the past 2 nights has experienced a burst of energy. All these symptoms can be a cause of sleep disorders such as insomnia, and others.
Step 2
As she has consulted the doctors and had Diagnostic and Statistical (DSMV) Manual of Mental Disorders-diagnosis because she wish to commit suicide and tired of her condition. All these things can be seen from her flight of ideas. All her mental condition can be diagnosed by the nurses. In her condition, a nurse care plan is very crucial to overcome her condition. There are some pharmacological as well as nonpharmacological treatments are known for her treatment :
Pharmacological treatment plans:
The nurse should record the variation of her work schedules.
Should check about the previous drug and alcohol consumption history or medical conditions, and injuries.
The nurse should provide patient education for its proper management in acquiring a good sleep.
The nurse should plan a proper diet and must teach to avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeine.
The nurse should provide over counter and herbal medications, antihistamines for sound sleep.
The cause can be of several reasons such as pain, discomfort or sound, and light or can maybe psychological such as fear, previous serious life condition, and anxiety issues.
Non-pharmacological treatment plans:
The nurse should focus on increasing daytime activities by providing exercise workout plans.
The patient should need to be educated.
The patient should be provided mind relaxation therapy, relaxing activities such as warm bathing, calm music, yoga, and reading writing journals and books during bedtime.
valerian, chamomile, lavender, kava helps to release stress and promote good sleep.
