Would you recommend gastric bypass surgery to patients interested in weight loss? What factors (if any) would you consider in making such a recommendation? Let's say a patient saw this article and decided to get gastric bypass. You were asked to educate the patient on the risks / benefits of gastric bypass. What would you tell them?
Answer:- No, Gastric bypass will not be recommended for patients interested in the weight loss. Before opting for this procedure, I would recommend the patient to try non surgical methods of weight loss which include physical activity and dietary changes.
Gatric bypass surgery are recommended inpatients who are morbidly obese(BMI>40), type 2 diabetes myelitis, sleep apnoea, etc.
Risks and Benefits of gastric bypass surgery:-
Benefits:-
1)weight loss
2) correction of dyslipidaemia
3)Control of diabetes melitus
4)Relieve from sleep apnoea
5) GERD is relieved
Risks of Gastric bypass Surgery:-
1) Nutritional deficiencies like Iron deficiency, vit B12 deficiency, protein malnutrition, vitamin A deficiency, etc.
2)Dumping syndrome
3)Anastomotic stricture
4)Anastomotic leak
5)Anastomotic ulcer

Gastric bypass surgery is a surgery in which the stomach is divided into a smaller puch and a bigger pouch.After this, the small intestine is attached to the smaller pouch.Due to this, the size of the stomach pouch decreases. This leads to early satiety and decreased food intake. Therefore leading to weight loss.
