Addressing the Risk
Supporting Lecture:
Review the following lecture:
Social Determinants of Health
Using data gathered from the text, South University Online Library
resources, and websites, write an annotated bibliography related to
potential interventions to address the risk and protective factors
that lead you to your chosen health topic or concern.
On the basis of your research, create a 2- to 3-page report containing an annotated bibliography that includes at least three references for at least two protective and two risk factors associated with your health topic or concern. The information for each topic cannot be from the same article. There should be a total of twelve articles reviewed.
Be sure to support your points for each of the components in parentheses with data from the program and outside research.
ANNOTED BIBILOGRAPHY. (Resilience)
The following literature review provides some of the latest research and programme that exist in both mental and substance use disorders about enhancing and activating resilience in persons who are at risk with mental use disorders. This resilience mainly concentrate on children, adolescent and young adults. And they are greatly influenced by family, friends, and social environment involving around individuals community, neighbourhood, school. It is essential to focus on high risk samples, because resilience is not positive adjustment but rather positive adjustment in the context of high level of adversity.
Resilience means knowing how to cope in spite of setbacks, barriers or limited resources and is a measure of how much you want something and how much you are willing, are able to overcome obstacles to get it.Resilience has to do with the emotional strength. The work of enhancing resilience for the person who have mental or substance use disorders having great impact during the formative stages to prevent more severe condition and to promote health.More research is needed is require for elaborating the possible effects, resilience is also critical in recovery stages where other supports and life skills is used to manage for the future stress. It is the combination of protective and risk factors that play a major role in development, enhancement and activation of resilience.
Protective factors are means by the characteristics of the child, family and wider environment thatvreduce the negative effect on child outcome(Masten 2002).Protective factor promote resilience by strong cultural identity, access to health care, stable housing.Protective factor can be gain through experiences, and resources that shows a person reaction to situation that might lead to maladaptive behaviour and outcomes(Taylor,Karcher, Kelly 2003).The protective factors are :
1. Individual factors- such as development of personal identity such as feeling of power, self worth,a sense of social justice ,a sense of cohesion with others, close relationship with competent adults, tolerance for delayed gratification,a good sense of humour ,problem solving skills and positive outlook for the future. 2. Family factors- like discipline, supervision of family members, trusting relationship.obeying the parents, trust worthy, opportunities to deal with critisicm, making good decision making skills exhibited by parents, better goal setting. 3. Community factors- such as participate in social work eg of school, individual have the opportunities to develop and practise cognitive skills, contribute to the work of the community, learn to handle challenges and practise procasial behavioral skills and self efficacy.
Risk factors are based on (Moe Johnson and Wade ,2007 )1. Individual factors- poor self control, negative emotionality,a need for immediate gratification, little sense of control over one's life(Wills and Dishion,2004).
2. Family factors- parental and siblings drug abuse, ineffective parental supervision, family conflicts and marital discord, domestic violence ,abuse and neglect.(Kumpher and Bluth,2004).
Understanding the role of risk and protective factors resonate with current health reforms that focus on prevention and community wellness which in turn influences the social determinants of health. The risk and protective factors contain in resonating, enhancing and activating resilience in persons with or at risk for behavioural health condition form the foundation of social determinants of health.
