How is the Generativity versus Stagnation theory similar to the Ego Integrity versus Despair stage? How are these stages different?
The 'Generativity vs. Stagnation' stage refers to either being able to "make a mark" on the world accomplishing things that make the world a better place or failure to find a way to contribute. This is quite similar in essence to the 'Ego Integrity vs. Despair' stage because the latter involves reflecting on one's life and either moving into feeling satisfied and happy with one's life or feeling a deep sense of regret. From a sense of connection with the community achieved during the 'Generativity vs. Stagnation' stage, individuals experience a positive resolution with respect to their past. However, if individuals remain uninvolved with society during the former stage, they are likely to not to achieve a sense of satisfaction with their selves. These stages are chronologically distinct. The 'Generativity vs. Stagnation' stage typically occurs in middle adulthood and is followed by the 'Ego Integrity vs. Despair' stage, which occurs during late adulthood. Also, in the former stage, the individual possesses some capacity to make alterations in their lives. On the other hand, individuals in the latter stage are usually only able to reflect back on their lives without being able to make any significant changes in the same.
