It has been said that
if you are at a party and you tell someone you have a terrible
disease or you are a terrorist, the conversation happily continues.
But, if you tell them you are religious, an icy chill hits the
air.
Peter Kreeft believes that much of this is due to ignorance in the
area of religious studies. His personal pet peeve is the statement:
“All religions are the same deep down.” He states: “That is simply
factually untrue. No one ever makes this claim unless he is:
abysmally ignorant of what the different religions of the world actually teach or
intellectually irresponsible in understanding these teachings in the vaguest and woolliest way or
morally irresponsible in being indifferent to them.”
Why would somebody say “deep down?” What would this “abysmally ignorant, intellectually irresponsible and morally irresponsible” person be trying to say about the human condition? Finally, are “all religions the same deep down?” Is “Deep Down” unchangeable?
1.What does Peter kreeft mean by “deep down” :
So, Why would somebody say “deep down?
The fear of always being right and also not allowing oneself to
express to others what that person believes.
One might say that all religions are deep down the same, because, if a person confesses that he/she believed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, he/she would find themself suddenly alone. When a person describes all religions being the same "deep down" they lacked religion is their human condition.
A person might say “deep down” because some Of the faiths have some common sects, principles or antagonistic.
And hence, a person might believe that all the religions have the same beginning roots.
Peter Kreeft does not believe that every religion is identical. According to him, If they were the same they would all have to be combined to make one religion and not multiple diverse faiths.
2. What does Peter Kreeft mean when he says, “abysmally ignorant,
intellectually irresponsible and morally irresponsible” person be
trying to say about the human condition?
So, what would this “abysmally ignorant, intellectually irresponsibleand morally irresponsible” person be trying to say about the human condition?
Peter Kreeft tells that, the abysmally ignorant, intellectually irresponsible and morally irresponsible persons think that, all the religions are the same even when they are not.
To them, It is easier to classify them all as religious so as in order not to offend anyone. They also lack the knowledge that each different religion has their own set of rituals, beliefs and what they consist of and constitute individually that identifies and marks them seperately from the other rest of the religions.
3.What is Peter Kreefts Point of view about the statement, are “all
religions the same deep down?
So, Finally in the last statement, are “all religions the same deep down?”
Peter Kreeft tells that all religions arnt the same. He tells us that, they are not the same deep down For an example, he explains that traditional Judaism, which worships the same God but not through Jesus Christ.
4. Is “Deep Down” unchangeable according to Peter Kreeft?
Peter Kreeft answers us if “Deep Down” is unchangeable.
He tells us that, deep down is not changable. But it can be changed by educating oneself on all the religion types.
Hence, This would be one of the main way to understand that not
all of the religions are deep down the same.
And so, individuals should not at all be afraid to discuss the
facts, rituals, beliefs and faith of any of the religion.
