How is culture relevant to IHRM? What do you believe is important to remember from Hofstede’s and the GLOBE studies?
In todays it has become inavitable for successfull businesses to operate globally. A global business structure is needed for the growth and development of any organisation. However, a global business structure presents its own challenges and requires changes in the area of human resourse management it self. The changes in human resource management are mostly influenced by a different cultures of global workforce. A global human resource pool brings in people whose beheviour , attitudeds and system of values is mostly influenced by a particular culture of the social environment that they grew up in. It becomes very important for the IHRM group to understand different cultures and to strike a balance between them and to create policies that are culture nutural.
Hofstede's and the GLOBE studies have both examined a number of managers and employees across the world and identified some key parameters which they are used to develop matrix which is used to defined the culture of different nations and organisations. Although there are alot of differences among their theories and the way they used diffent variables to draw their matrix, there theories on culture share a number of similarities. Both of their research suggests the importance of understanding the imapct of culture on the employees and managers working in a global organsisation and operating in multi cultural environment.
