How can I differentiate which titration type happens to which given compound in a question?
(if the question gave me a compound and said which
type of titration happens to the compound out of the 5 types)
Types of titrayion:
1-Acid-base titration
2-Redox
3-Complexometry
4-Precipitation
5-Non-aquas
Because I don't know how to differentiate between them.
Good Question indeed.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basically first you have to understand the type of reaction that happening with your compound. then only to estimate your compound, you could apply respective tiration procesure.
Let's assume you have an acid may be strong acid or weak acid, now you must have to add base to estimate your acidic compound.
Because base can neutralise the acids and form salts. that shows a sharp change in pH at the end point.
For example, estimation of H+ in HCl, CH3COOH , by OH- in NaOH, NH4OH
Now if your compound have some ions and they are changing their ions by donating and accepting electrons. then you have to understand that it is Red-ox reaction. and you have to try red-ox titration.
For example, Estimation Fe2+ by Sn2+ or Fe 3+ by I-
Now suppose you have a metal ion/ions as a unknown conpound and an organic ligand and their is a chance of formation of complexes. Then you could think of complexometric titration.
For examples, Estimation of Ca2+ , Mg2+ by EDTA ion
Now suppose you have an compound and it precipated out easily on reaction with some other compound then you could estimate it by precipitation titration method.
For example, Estimation of Ag in AgNO3 by NaCl.
