Expert Solution

  • According to Hunter in his description of private, parochial, and public spaces he argues that family life and family ties can transcend (cross over) the boundaries that exist between the various realms people cross in the city environment and its social interactions.
  • For Hunter (1985), social bonds (and social order) are intimately connected with geographic space, and he identified three forms of social order through which people in urban communities experience social life – the private (e.g. in the home), the parochial (e.g. in the neighbourhood) and the public (e.g. in the city centre).
  • Hunter 1985 describes three separate and distinct levels of social order, each with their own social bond, institutional locus, and spatial domain. Private social control operates through close friends and family, and is responsible for controlling behavior within close personal social networks. At the level of the neighborhood or local community is the parochial order, which is responsible for exerting informal social control through the development of local ties through community and organizational participation. According to Hunter 1985, public social control is exerted through social bonds that develop between neighborhood residents and external government and nongovernment institutions.
