Over the years the role of HR in the organization has changed significantly. The various stages can be illustrated as:-
Early Days - IN the early says the HR function was focused on providing protection for the employees and making sure that women and children were taken care of properly. The role was mostly paternalistic in nature.
After the 1900 -1980s - The focus was on management of personnel and improving the productivity of the workers and managing other aspects such as their absence, proper training and recruitment were given a lot of importance. After the world wars,` the focus shifted on pay regulation and adherence to policy norms.
1980 till 2000 - More technical aspects in HRM were explored to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the workers through engagement.
After 2000 - It paved the way for strategic HR initiatives and employees were treated as partners and seen as agents of change. It was realized that only employees can be a source competitive advantage which other competitors cannot replicate easily and it has become the role of the HR to ensure that employees feel valued and contribute their best to the organization.
In numerous areas data is being used to make an informed decision these days, in comparison to that, the field of HR has remained a tad bit behind so I would like to play the role of Data Strategist and leverage the huge amount of data available to take more sound and well informed decisions regarding hiring, retaining , evaluating and laying off people. The focus would be to keep data at the helm of all important and strategic decisions being made in the company with regards to HRM.Data-driven decision making is, therefore, something which fascinates me the most and is something I would like to explore further.
