11. Explain the importance of ZAV curve, and plot it for the soil as you see in your residential area..

Solutions

Expert Solution

The curve which will include a line having voids filled with 100% water and no air void(Zero air void line) is called as Zero Air Void Curve.

The dry unit weight if zero air void line is given by-

ℽd = Gs ℽw / (1 + w Gs)

The main benefit of this zero air void line is that the compaction curve should not get intersect with this line, no matter how much we apply high compaction energy, because it is the theoretical line as 100% air cannot be expelled and all the voids cannot be filled with water and because of it we can control the compaction test results.

The graph of compaction curve and zero air void line is given by-

The first table gives the compaction curve and second table gives zero air void line curve

As part of a soil analysis on a plot of land, you want to determine the ammonium content using gravimetric analysis with sodium tetraphenylborate, Na B(C6H5)4–. Unfortunately, the amount of potassium, which also precipitates with sodium tetraphenylborate, is non-negligible, and must be accounted for in the analysis. Assume that all potassium in the soil is present as K2CO3, and all ammonium is present as NH4Cl. A 4.935-g soil sample was dissolved to give 0.500 L of solution. A 150.0-mL aliquot...
