Gender stereotypes may limit children to narrowly-defined roles that may not account for a child's unique and individual interests and abilities. What are your thoughts about gender-specific toys? (For example: Are dolls okay for boys? Toy cars or trucks for girls?) How did your parents or caregivers feel about this topic? As a parent, how do you think you would approach it?

  • Almost in everyone's childhood including mine,we have seen gender specific toys.I did play with doll houses and kitchen sets than with cars and trucks.Toys are an integral part of child's development process.
  • The toys we play with when we are children have an impact not only on how we see ourselves and on what skills we learn, but also on how our brains physically develop. Therefore, breaking this gender stereotype from childhood should be important.Parents should use gender neutral toys for their children for their healthy identity development.
  • My parents did the same with me but now their thoughts are different.Even my parenting skills would not be gender stereotypical with my children. Its important for children to understand the differences between male and female but only anatomically, other than that,no differentiations need to be encouraged.
  • A boy should be given kitchen sets to play with,to make them understand that household chores are not just meant for women and men should be well equipped to do the same work.Similarly,a girl should be given cars and video games to play to make them understand that their identity is not confined to their homes, they are free to do whatever they want and pursue any profession, even if its male dominated sector.
  • Gender identification will help children in recognizing who they are, discover their interests and what they want from life.Just because a boy likes to care for tohers and wants to purse nursing course when he grows up,shouldnt be judged.Similarly if a girl wants to become a car mechanic, that should be normal. This leads to healthy gender development and less stereotyping, getting caught up in boxes defined by society.
  • A boy having feminine characteristics should be normal as a girl having masculine characteristics, giving them freedom to live the way they want and this should start from early childhood, from parental upbringing. And now we as parents of the current generation should focus on this, since this would help to get rid of depression in children as well.
