Choose true or false for each statement regarding capacitors in a circuit.
true false  If you connect two different capacitors in series in a circuit, then the charge on each of them is the same.
true false  If you connect two different capacitors in series in a circuit, then the voltage across each of them is the same.
true false  Three identical capacitors in series have triple the capacitance of each individual one.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer :

  • [ TRUE ] The electric field is dependent on the charge density on the plates.

Because, Electric field due to charged plate is :

  • [ TRUE ] The voltage of a disconnected charged capacitor increases when the plate area is increased.

Because for a disconnected charged capacitor. The charge on the plate is constant. and hence the voltage will be inversely proportional to capacitance of the capacitor. So, when its plate area is increased, its capacitance increases and hence voltage will decrease.

  • [ FALSE ] The voltage of a connected charged capacitor decreases when the plates are brought closer together.

Because the capacitor is still connected to the power supply thus the potential difference can't change.

Choose true or false for each statement regarding capacitors in a circuit.

  • [ TRUE ] If you connect two different capacitors in series in a circuit, then the charge on each of them is the same.
  • [ FALSE ] If you connect two different capacitors in series in a circuit, then the voltage across each of them is the same.
  • [ FALSE ] Three identical capacitors in series have triple the capacitance of each individual one.
