Variation in efficiency may rise because of the payment given in private prisons, which directly depends on the number of beds used and typically encompasses no inducements to provide the looked-for results like low recidivism rates. Supporters of private prisons claim that private prisons costs lower and enhances the quality due to competition. Although the degree to which private firms contest with each other for prison contracts is honestly negligible as they are limited in this business.     

The aim of the Private prison companies is to accomplish the aim of the correctional system at lesser cost and with superior quality. Supporters of private prisons say that the competitive market and absence of administrative restrictions allows private prisons to make it efficient. Although study on whether private prisons enhances the effectiveness is restricted but does not comprise of robust evidence that they are more efficient than public prisons.

To relate the cost of both the prisons; private and public, it is significant to contain capital costs of the prison facility and the amount associated with the monitoring for the state agency that supervises the agreement with the prison. Additionally, account for differences in essential safety levels and needs of prisoner, which affects the expenditure of administering a prison must also be taken into consideration.
