General properties of discontinuity planes and their
effects on rock mass quality

● All rock masses have bedding planes, fissures, fractures, joints and some mechanical defects which are known as discontinuities.
● There are some parameters to describe the properties of discontinuities, like:-
1)orientation of discontinuity 2)intensity of discontinuity 3)spacing 4) frequency of discontinuity 5)persistence 6)shape and size 7)roughness 8)aperture 9) discontinuity sets and block size.
● The mechanical properties of a rock mass are affected by discontinuities such as
1)planes of weakness,. 2)Mineralogical variations, 3)Bedding planes,. 4)Cracks, flaws and joints.
● The fracture or discontinuity frequency measured along a line through a rock mass is often detailed as one single figure, yet the value can depend significantly on the orientation of the line through the rock mass.
● Effects of parameter number of sets of discontinuities on rock mass is that axial strength decreases with increase of confining pressure.
