In your opinion, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the COSEWIC process from submission of a Status Report to the Species Specialist Group/Committee (e.g. Terrestrial Mammal Subcommittee) to the National COSEWIC Committee to the Minister of Environment and Governor in Council (GiC) decision on status listing? Answer 1:)
COSEWIC is internationally exclusive in terms of its breadth of directed responsibilities, its integration of aboriginal traditional knowledge (ATK), and the comprehensive representation from together inside and outside government. The committee now covers the full range of animals and plants. It deduced this definition of wildlife species as a purpose to provide legal protection for unique units of biodiversity critical to the determination of formally known biological species. COSEWIC uses evolutionary significance and discreteness as the primary measures for recognizing designatable units (DUs).
The main disadvantage of this committee is that federal, territorial, and provincial government ministers nominate Jurisdictional members of COSEWIC. Therefore, any nation can misuse the power of authentication. Moreover, jurisdictions take a long time to clear COSEWIC Draft reports because it undergoes open and extensive external review, under which it takes typically 1–2 years.
