A batter stands at home plate in Yankee Stadium and hits the ball toward the right field foul pole. The pole is 314 ft from home plate. If the baseball leaves the bat at a speed of 100 mph and an angle of 17.5 degrees upward, how high would the right fielders glove have to be to catch the ball before it hits the foul pole. Neglect air drag.
Let,
'y' be the vertical distance covered by the baseball at time 't' when it reaches the pole
'x' be the horizontal distance covered by the baseball in time 't' when it reaches the pole = 314 ft
'g' be the acceleration due to gravity = 32.17 ft/s2
Hence the right fielder's gloves need to be 18.08 ft above the point where the baseball left after striking the bat to catch the ball before it hits the foul pole
