A short note on “ Economic impact of pavement distresses”

Let us try to understand from Pavement Distresses itself . Pavement Distresses is the result of continuous wear and tear of road by vehicles over the period of time . If they are using properly lab tested materials without considering economy it will give long term benefits . During design of pavement engineer get some data from contractor i.e life time of pavement and traffic load in this given pavement including whether condition . During that time itself we can predict that how many years we will not face any problem on it. Due to insufficient data given by contractor to the engineer to compensate in economic and get benefited , which create long term problem for users .

There are many factors which distress and destroy our pavement including environmental and structural issues.

Environmental Distresses

These distresses normally occur from the top down and include the following:

• Longitudinal, Transverse, and Thermal cracking ;
• Bleeding – a film of asphalt binder on the pavement surface

To avoid those problem we have to do various method which are costly;

• skin patching,
• crack sealing,
• sealcoating,
• slurry seal,
• chip seals.

This above method need more manpower and material .

Structural Distresses

• Alligator Cracking – Series of interconnected cracks, resembling an alligator’s hide
• Depressions – Localized pavement surface areas with slightly lower elevations than the surrounding pavement.
• Potholes – Missing chunks of pavement, leaving holes in the pavement

• Fatigue Cracking.

Likewise various problem like skidding of vehicles may occurs which may lead to large human as well as economic loss . Pavement distress are the major problem from which the pavement are going to be functionless. Before doing any improvement there is necessary of investigation that from which factor it happened and what are the remedy we can do to improve it . For this government should invest large amount of money.

One the other hand , during construction you ( the contractors ) should use properly graded bitumen , aggregate and soil improvement technique to get rid of this problem .But if they are not doing so , later it will create huge loss and uncomfortable to the users. So economy has high influence on pavement distress .
