Human blood type is an example. How many alleles are involved in this trait? How many alleles do you inherit for this trait?

How does the term antigen relate to blood type?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Human blood group is ABO blood group example of multiple allelic system. There are three different alleles to determine the blood group of humans. These are IA , IB and i allele. IA and IB are codominant alleles while i is recessive. The IA allele produces A antigen on the membrane of RBC's while IB produces B antigen and i do not codr for any of the antigens. Four different blood groups are possible from the genotype combinations(6) of these allele( IA IA and IAi = A blood group, IBIB and IBi = B blod group IAIB= AB Blood group and ii= O(none of A and B antigens are present on RBC's membrane..

A child inherits one allele from the father and one from the mother. Only two alleles are inherited for the blood group from parents. The possible blood groups of children can be predicted from the blood group of the parents.

Allele IA produces on the RBC's membrane by adding N acetyl galactosramine to the precursor H antigen already present on the RBCs membrane.

The B allele adds the Galactose group
