The City of Columbus recently issued an NPDES permit to a beer brewery discharging wastewater at a flowrate of 0.15 m3/sec into Buckeye Creek (flowrate = 0.25 m3/sec), such that BOD5 of immediately after discharge must not exceed 2.5 mg/L. Upstream of the discharge, BOD5 in Buckeye Creek was measured at 1.5 mg/L. BOD decay rate constants were measured separately for the upstream creek (k = 2 d-1), the wastewater effluent (k = 0.2 d-1), and the downstream creek after mixing (k = 0.5 d-1).

  1. What would be the ultimate BOD of Buckeye Creek immediately upstream and downstream of the wastewater discharge, assuming the brewery meets the permitted BOD5?
  2. What would be the wastewater’s maximum ultimate BOD to meet the NPDES permit limits?
  3. If this discharge caused an initial dissolved oxygen deficit in the stream of 2 mg/L, what would be the oxygen deficit at the critical point?

You have wastewater plant discharging into a clean river. The BOD of the Wastewater flow is 300 mg/L, the wastewater flow is 15 m3/sec, the river flow upstream of the mixing point is 120 m3/sec and BOD upstream of river is 0. The DO of the river at the mixed point is 8 mg/L and the saturation DO in the river would be 10 mg/L, the deoxygenation rate coefficient is 0.30/day and the reaeration constant is 0.90/day. The river is...

A local brewery sells their beer in 330 ml bottles. On average the beer is filled with 328.1 ml with a standard deviation of 0.9 ml. Since it is possible to under-fill the bottle but impossible to fill the bottle with more than 330 ml, the distribution is skewed left. Use this information and Excel functions to answer the following questions, and round your answers to four decimal places. a. What is the probability that the average fill of a...

Bear Brewery, based in Langley, British Columbia, specializes in craft beer. The brewery produces two ales: Amber and Dubbel. Bear Brewery aligns its ale prices with competitors. The brewery sells its Amber for $14.95 per case and its Dubbel for $15.65 per case. The per case variable costs for Amber include $3.50 in raw materials, $0.75 in packaging, $1.20 in manufacturing overhead and $0.55 in shipping. Dubbel’s per case variable costs are $3.85 in raw materials, $0.75 in packaging, $1.95...

A local brewery wishes to ensure that an average of 12 ounces of beer is used to fill each bottle. In order to analyze the accuracy of the bottling process, the bottler takes a random sample of 16 bottles with the following results. The data are shown below. A brewery produces cans of beer that are supposed to contain exactly 12 ounces. But owing to the inevitable variation in the filling equipment, the amount of beer in each can is actually a random variable with a normal distribution. It has a mean of 12 ounces and a standard deviation of .30 ounce. If you bought a six-pack of their beer what is the probability that you are going to actually get less than or equal to a total...

Suppose a brewery has a filling machine that fills 12-ounce bottles of beer. It is known that the amount of beer poured by this filling machine follows a normal distribution with a mean of 12.10 ounces and a standard deviation of .04 ounces. The company is interested in reducing the amount of extra beer that is poured into the 12 ounce bottles. The company is seeking to identify the highest 1.5% of the fill amounts poured by this machine. For...

A local brewery distributes beer in bottles labeled 24 ounces. A government agency thinks that the brewery is cheating its customers. The agency selects 40 of these bottles, measures their contents, and obtains a sample mean of 23.8 ounces with a standard deviation of 1.1 ounces. Use a 0.01 significance level (α = 0.01) to test the agency's claim that the brewery is cheatings its customers (that the average volume of their beers is less than 24 ounces). H0:   ...

Your wastewater facility releases ~ 82,000 gallons per day and has a permit to release magnesium at a total load of 2700 kg/yr (6.0 kg/day maximum). The facility runs 5 days a week and 11 months per year. Random spot checks of your effluent reveal the following: Based on the available data, how many days do you estimate you are in and out of attainment with your permit (extrapolate to cover the full 11-month operating period of the facility)? Will...
