Write the names of the arc-extinguishing medium.
CBs are generally rated as per their arc-extinguishing medium. The medium are highly dielectric in nature and are classified based on their capacity to extinguish an electric arc which is formed due to stored energy in the system while opening a circuit breaker. It also prevents re-striking.
They are majorly classified into 4 parts
-Air break CB
Uses static atmospheric air to extinguish current, has the lowest extinguish capacity among all the types, it can be used for voltages upto 18kV and has a rupture capacity of 450-500MVA.
-Air blast CB
Uses rammed/air velocity air to extinguish current, it can be used for voltages upto 220kV and has a rupture capacity of 500MVA.
-Vacuum CB
Uses vacuum to extinguish current, it can be used for voltages upto 220kV and has a rupture capacity of 1000MVA.
-SF6 CB
Uses SF6 medium to extinguish current, it can be used for voltages upto 765kV and has a rupture capacity of 1800MVA. SF6 CB is the superior among all and are costly
