Rank the species below in terms of suitability as a model system for studying critical aspects of human biology, (1=most preferred, 5=least preferred). Note that all five have been used to study human disease. Explain why you made the choices you did.

Dog

Rhesus monkey

Mouse

Chimpanzee

Armadillo

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. The most preffered model organism is mouse. Mice are biologically very similar to humans and get many of the same diseases, for the same genetic reasons. Mice can be genetically manipulated to mimic virtually any human disease or condition. handling with mouse is easier compared to other and we get faster results. as their size is small so that we can experiment more.

2. Rhesus monekey/ old world monkey, as this very much distinct from human compared to chimpanzee. but they are important for study of human disease due to its genetic, physiologic and metabolic similarity to humans.

3. Chimpanzees are rarely used in research and are protected from highly invasive procedures. As our closest relatives, chimpanzees have a lot of potential to tell us about mechanisms of disease (and what genes may be responsible for human intelligence)

4. armadillo  has been most exploited as a model for leprosy

5. Dog being an important animal model for human genetic disease. In recent years, especially since the sequencing of the canine genome.

Each of the distributions below could be used to model the time spent studying for an exam. Take one random sample of size 25 from each of the distributions below. Then, take 1,000 resamples (i.e., sample with replacement) of size 25 from your sample. In each case (a,b,c), plot the empirical distribution of the sample mean, estimate the mean of the sample mean, and estimate the standard deviation of the sample mean. We wish to model a population of two fish species by a system of differential eqns. x′ = f(x,y), y′ = g(x,y). Provide a system of differential eqns. that describe the following assumptions: (a)(5) A predator-prey system in which prey can grow to no limits, but predators die out unless they find prey to eat. (b)(5) Two species which individually would die out but collaboration enhances survival of BOTH species. (c)(5) A predator-prey system in which prey can grow with...
