Discuss the immune response to E. Coli. Include the branches of the immune system which would mount the response, how that response would be mounted, and the major effector functions that would be observed. While you should include information on the innate immune response to your chosen pathogen, the bulk of your response should be focused on the adaptive immune response.
Ans- Adaptive immunity, also known as specific or acquired immunity, is capable of recognizing and selectively eliminating specific foreign antigen. Adaptive immunity displays 4 characteristic features:: Antigen specificity, Immunologic memory, Diversity, self and non self recognition
IMMUNE RESPONSE TO ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY:: There are two branches of acquired immunity, which have different sets of participants and different purposes but one common aim: to eliminate the antigen. These two arms interect with each other and collaborate to achieve the final goal of eliminating the antigen. Of these two arms of the acquired immune response, one is mediated mainly by B-cells and circulating antibodies, a form of immunity which is referred as humoral immunity. The other is Mediated by T-cells, which do not synthesize antibodies but instead synthesize and release various cytokines that affect other cells. Hence, this arm of the acquired immunity response is termed as cell mediated immunity.
