The leading causes of death in the United States in 1900 were infectious diseases. The leading diseases were pneumonia and flu, tuberculosis, gastrointestinal infections, and diphtheria. The leading causes of death during 2011are heart diseases, cancers, chronic lower respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases.

The change in pattern of these leading causes of death are,

  • Improvement in sanitization facilities that curbed the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Vaccination and an effective immunization delivery system has helped to curb the infectious diseases.
  • The medical facilities has improved since 1900s, that has lead to decline in death rate to infectious diseases.
  • The change in lifestyle, that is the sedentry life style has resulted in increasing heart diseases and cerebrovascular diseases, and deaths due to it.
  • The changes in environment, environmental degradation, pollution etc are leading causes of respiratory diseases and the malignant neoplasms.
