Write equations for the reaction of each substance in oxygen if a reaction occurs:
1. Adding glowing orange wooden splint to oxygen and it relighting.
2. Adding glowing orange steel wool to oxygen and it sparkling.
3. Adding glowing orange charcoal to oxygen and relit
4. Adding burnt sulfur to oxygen and it relighting with blue flame
1.Adding glowing orange wooden splint to oxygen and it relighting.
Solution :- Wooden splint is nothing but the wooden stick, organic compounds are present in the wood therefore it burns in presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water following is the reaction equation
organic compound + O2(g) ---- > CO2(g) + H2O(g)
2. Adding glowing orange steel wool to oxygen and it sparkling.
Solution : - steel wool contains iron (Fe) so the reaction equation is as follows when it reacts with oxygen
4Fe(s) + 3O2(g) ----- > 2Fe2O3(s)
3. Adding glowing orange charcoal to oxygen and relit
Solution :- Charcoal is nothing but carbon when it react with oxygen then it forms carbon dioxide. Following is the reaction equation
C(s) + O2(g) ----- > CO2(g)
4. Adding burnt sulfur to oxygen and it relighting with blue flame
Solution:- When sulfur reacts with the oxygen then forms sulfur dioxide or sulfur trioxide
Following are the reaction equations
S + O2(g) --- > SO2(g)
2S + 3O2(g) ---- > 2SO3(g)
