1. On one approach of an intersection with fixed time traffic signal, vehicles arrival rate is 600 vehicles per hour. The effective green time for this approach is 30 seconds, the saturation flow of this approach is 1800 vehicles per hour and the cycle time of the intersection is 80 seconds.

a. Evaluate the performance of the signal design i.e. will all vehicles clear during the green time?

b. Recommend the changes to the green time for this approach to achieve an optimum signal design i.e. If there is surplus green time, then state its value.

c. Due to a traffic incident, the original saturation flow is reduced by 20%. Will there be any delay under the new situation based on the original design? How many vehicles will experience the delay?

d. Under a new strategic transport plan to divert some vehicles to other areas, the saturation flow has been reduced to 1300 vehicles per hour by reconfiguring the layout of the intersection. Under this condition how may vehicles will be delayed in each cycle?

DOT wants to install a traffic signal at a dangerous intersection on US-51. The traffic signal will cost $450,000. Based on historical data, it will eliminate, on average, one fatal accident every 10 years, but will cause 5 additional minor accidents every year. The standard cost assigned to fatal accidents is $12,300,000 and the cost assigned to minor accidents is $160,000 each. At an interest rate of 4% per year, does the B/C ratio justify the cost of the signal?...

Traffic counts and signal timing data were collected for the intersection of Sand Creek Road and Wolf Road. The intersection is signalized. The collected data show that, for a particular cycle, vehicles on the through lane of the SB of Sand Creek Road had the following arrival headway pattern (counted from the start of the red time of the cycle): – 2.5 seconds for the first 10 seconds – 2 seconds for the time period of 44 ‐ 50 seconds,...

A traffic light at a certain intersection is green 50% of the time, yellow 10% of the time, and red 40% of the time. A car approaches this intersection once each day. We would like to know about the number of days that pass up to and including the first time the car encounters a red light. Assume that each day represents an independent trial. a) Define the random variable of interest, it support, and parameter values. b) What is the...

Given Choosing between two proposed traffic safety project intersection of a high crash rate intersection. Two solutions are proposed. Vehicles arrive at a signalized intersection at a uniform rate of 900 veh/hr. The saturation flow rate for the intersection is 1200 veh/hr. However, a crash has reduced the saturation flow rate to only 300 veh/hr for a one-hour period. Assuming D/D/1 queuing, determine: a. How long will it take for the resulting queue to clear? (6 points) b. How much delay is experienced as compared to if the saturation flow rate had NOT been reduced? (6 points) c. What...
