Why did Reconstruction come to an end?
The main reason behind the end of reconstruction was the compromise in the year of 1876. In the election of 1876, Samuel Tilden had represented the Democratic Party and Hayes had represented the Republican Party. But the Congress had earned the victory in that election. The Republican Party had requested the southern Democratic Party to give vote for Hayes. But at that time, Southern Democratic Party had proposed a condition that Republican Party will end the Military district. In that time, Republicans were more desperate to win the Election so they had accepted the deal and did a compromise. This compromise is well known as the compromise of 1876.
This compromise is the ultimate reason behind the end of Reconstruction. Republicans also had withdrawal themselves from their fight for racial equality and the fight for the black’s right. Not only that, Hayes also given up the last federal troops. This kind of Compromises and giving up in important fights had ended the Reconstruction
