Haydn found that the patronage system provided the stability needed to be a successful artist while Mozart felt that the patronage system was too restrictive. Which setting do you think would be more conducive to creating great art: a stable job in which you have to answer to an employer, or that of a freelancer who answers only to himself/herself but doesn’t necessarily have a stable income?

  • To live in the kind of world we are living in,wherein at every step ones needs money,a stable job would be preferable initially to earn some money through your art and make ends meet. I know art is something which cant be expressed by sitting at a desk, but to be more practical,a job is needed.Any kind of art is an expressive and creative job,and requires a personal space, its definitely not restricted to a 9-5 job format therefore some people prefer to work as freelancers as well wherein they have the liberty to do anything through their art.
  • But,initially to start,in order to develop a base and some contacts, one can always opt to work under someone, get trained, refine your skills, work for them and earn money too and gain some experience as well about the market. Then, one can become a freelancer, and display their art forms the way they want. To be realisitic,as much as an artist says that he doent need money, everyone does! You need a stable income for basic survival and even take your art form forward for the world to see.
  • Nobody wants to be a starving artist, untill one is living in their own bubble. To earn money one can use their talent in commercial arts job  for things like advertisements, media, or entertainment for some time and then take up freelancing.Becoming a successful freelancer also involves a little bit of mastery of the art of creative marketing.
  • No matter if you choose to sell you fine art or if you want to start freelancing for clients, though, you should also begin to take networking seriously. Networking, itself, is an art form. And like most art forms, it can be learned, honed, and mastered. When artists master it, they can make connections with art galleries, collectors, dealers etc. So,I guess both hold importance in todays time.
