Read and respond to the Communication Skills, critical thinking question below:

  1. Clearly, women and minorities were held back from employment opportunities in the past. So shouldn't we give them special consideration today (like giving them jobs when they are qualified even though there are better qualified white males)? Should we be increasing or decreasing affirmative action programs?

Millennium long discrimination cannot be eliminated in few years and things take their own time to settle down. Women were dominated and treated as second class citizens both at home and in the society. Today, with all the rights that they have attained have made them strong and liberal when compared to the previous centuries. Has everything changed and equality attained? Certainly not. There is salary discrimination, selection discrimination, sexual harassment etc. in the society and in industries. Women are still struggling to manage both home and job. So, there should be enough consideration and priorities given to the women with some privileges that would ease their life until things get settled and until men feel that women should be given more space and opportunities. Affirmative actions on the other hand should not affect the normal rights of men because the times have changed where even the men struggle to get a job and stick to it.
