What is the mechanism by which solute is dissolved in non polar solvents? Explain briefly. (5 mark)
Ans: Any solute dissolves in a solvent on the following factors-
> Favourable interaction
>Free energy change of solute and solvent
The mechanism of solute-solvent interaction involves 3 steps:-
1) Dettachment of solute from bulk form
( solute bulk) (solute bulk-1) + (dettached solute)
2) Formation of vaccant side in solvent
(solvent) (solvent with vaccant site) + ( free solvent molecule)
3) Insertion of dettached solute molecule in vaccant site of solvent
+ (solvent with embeded solute molecule)
As in case of non-polar solvent, it don't have dielectric constant , not have ability to form covalent bond and neither it can form H-bond. Hence non-polar solvents only are able to dissolve non-polar solutes by inducing dipole moment.
