Excellent Question
There has been extensive use and reliability on spectroscopy data for structure elucidation and confirmation.
There are certain reasons why the spectroscopic data and physical constants are always better than chemical tests i.e.:
a) speed of testing therefore no time is wasted
b) accuracy of instruments is very high and every type of human error can be avoided.
c) the instruments are highly sensitive towards any change, thus the information is handy.
d) every chemical cannot be tested by simple tests, since many chemicals are new therefore devicing a new chemical test may take a lot of time.
e) The physical constants and spectroscopic data is fairly constant for a compound irrespective of physical conditions of its synthesis.
f) the amount of sample required for analysis is very small i.e. usually in milli grams.
g) the physical test of a sample may be dependent upon the temperature and other atmospheric conditions but the spectroscopic data is not.
Therefore, physical constant and spectroscopy data more reliable than chemical tests for unknown compound identification.
