Green Initiative Research Projects
You are working for an international firm with over 100, 000
employees located in several different countries. A strategic goal
is to help improve the environment while increasing revenues and
reducing costs. The Environmental Technologies Program just
started, and the VP of Operations, is the program sponsor. A
program manager and a steering committee made up of ten senior
executives are overseeing the program. There are several projects
underneath this program, one being the Green Computing Research
Project. The chief investment officer, and project sponsor, has
given this project high priority and plans to hold special
interviews to hand-pick the project manager and team. The project
sponsor is also a member of the program steering committee.
The main purpose of the Green Computing Research Project is to
research possible applications of green computing including:
Data centre and overall energy efficiency
The disposal of electronic waste and recycling
Telecommuting
Virtualization of server resources
Thin client solutions
Use of open source software, and
Development of new software to address green computing for
internal use and
potential sale to other organizations
The budget for the project is R500, 000, and the goal is to provide an extensive report, including detailed financial analysis and recommendations on what green computing technologies to implement.
TASKS
1. Research green computing and projects that have been done or are
being done by large organisation such as IBM, Dell and HP. Expand
your definition of green computing to include all of the topics
listed in the background scenario. Describe each citing an example
of how at least one organisation has implemented one area of green
computing.
The term Green computing is nothing but a process of developing applications. It mainly focuses on disposal of computer peripherals like
monitors, cpu,Hard disks, servers e.t.c without causing any harm to the environment.the concept of green computing is all about
recycling these devices.
For example-
1.Data center and overall energy efficiency- IBM has implemented green computing for their data center architectures.By doing so there will be a minimal amount of e waste in natural environment.IBM uses rack mounted technology servers which are energy efficient and saves 40 percent of energy.
2.Disposal of electronic waste and recycling- The usage of electronic products is rapidly increasing. And the large number of electronic devices must be disposed properly in order to save environment.for example companies like sony apple are responsible financially in the process reusing their old devices.
3.Telecommuting- ByImplementing work from home for their employees is the one of the best way to decrease workers at the work space which shows less impact environment,According to tele network reserach there are more than 60000 cars on road every year.
4.Virtualization of server resources- Virtualization is nothing but extracting or merging multiple physical storages and provide a single virtual space for the usage. For example splitting of one physical server into multiple virtual servers.Using virtualization technologies promotes in providing efficient server storage by cost cutting on physical storage and maintenance.
5.Thin client solutions- thin client service is nothing but virtualization of servers and providing them to the hosts according to their requirements.for example-thin client solution is mainly used in cloud computing.By this implementation we can achieve energy saving on data centers.
6.use of open source software-open source software are readily available for free to use,It provides the accessibility to users with out any cost.and it is not linked to any vendor for usage.By developing the open source models the users can save more than 50 billion a a year.
7.Development of new software to address green computing for internal use- Nano technology is used as an attempt to for material manipulation at nano level.so companies a re focusing on new emerging techniques like pay as you go which is already implemetned in some of the cloud technologies.
8.
