Chemistry 252 has focused on two main topics: the nature of the equilibrium state, and the rates of processes that take place to achieve equilibrium, i.e., chemical kinetics.

Write a paragraph that compares the information content required to describe the equilibrium state with that necessary to describe the rate processes that connect reactants and products.   In your answer, include a discussion of the energy levels, molecular motions, and appropriate length scales of all important species involved in specifying the equilibrium state. Include a similar discussion for any key species that play a role in the reaction rates that establish equilibrium.   Indicate how the properties of these species are incorporated into a theory of reaction rates.

Topics that may be helpful in constructing your answer:

             Potential energy surface

             Reaction coordinate

             Partition functions

             Transition state

             Saddle point

Your paragraph should be written in acceptable scientific prose. You should use complete sentences, and the logical flow of your arguments should be clear. There is no word limit, but preferably no longer than a page typed.

The discussion for this week will focus on the importance of the two main topics of this chapter (photosynthesis and cellular respiration) to each other. There is a unique balance between these two energy cycles, and your postings should address something specific that addresses this idea. For instance, you can focus on one of the following: the history of these processes (which one we think started first and how that eventually led to the other one), different types of interactions,...

It has been awhile since I have taken Chemistry and I have an equilibrium problem that I need help with. Borax is a sparingly soluble salt and dissolves in water according to the following reaction: Na2B407 * 10 H2O(s) <----> 2Na+(aq)+B405(OH)42-(aq)+8H2O(l)    We can write an equilibrium expression for this dissolution as follows:   K=[Na+]2[B4O5(OH)42-] This is given in my lab book but I am confused as to how this reaction and equilibrium expression was determined. (b) Choose two goods and their corresponding prices, such that the consumer is in disequilibrium, i.e., he or she gets more marginal utility from one good than from the other given the goods prices.
