Road maintenance is extremely important because

a) preserve the road in its originally constructed condition

b) protect adjacent resources and user safety, and

c) provide efficient, convenient travel along the route. Unfortunately, maintenance is often neglected or improperly performed resulting in rapid deterioration of the road and eventual failure from both climatic and vehicle use impacts.

Road maintenance also includes

a) the underlying drainage system maintenance

b) the actual road surface maintenance

c) any Emergency storm maintenance required for the road

d) any reclamation efforts

Broadly speaking Road sufrace maintenance can include any of the following

1) Asphalt Overlays

2) Re-shaping

3) Patching- helps to fill up potholes

4) Slab replacemnent - this is replacing whole sections of roads

5) Smoothing - lightly re-doing the gravel on the road without very deep digging.

6) Re-construction

Both hand tools and machine tools can be used for road maintenance

Common hand tools include the following

a) Pick and mattock

b) Grass cutter or slasher

c) Shovel and spade

d) Hoe

e) Wheel barrow

f) Hand rammer

Machine tools used in road maintenance are
