The integumentary system of mammals consists of the skin, hair,
nails, glands, and nerves. The five potential functions of
intigument in animals are as following...
- Protection : Intigument protects body's
internal living tissues and organs. It also works as a barrier
against invasion by infectious organisms. The skin protects the
rest of the body from the basic elements of nature such as wind,
water, and UV sunlight.
- Sensory function : Intigumentary system in
mammals has sensory function. It acts as a receptor for touch,
pressure, pain, heat, and cold.
- Thermoregulation : The integumentary system
helps regulate body temperature through its tight association with
the sympathetic nervous system. It also protects the body from
dehydration.
- Synthesis : In mammals, some parts of the
intigumentary system help in synthesizing certain compounds which
are important for the growth and development of the body. The
epidermal layer of human skin synthesizes vitamin D when exposed to
UV radiation
- Storage and disposal : The intigument of
mammals helps in storing water and fat. It also helps in disposal
of waste materials.
