1. Structural steel is used widely in construction and industrial design and works well because of the following reasons:-
* As compared to other structural materials steel has high strength to weight ratio. This means steel contains very high strength and results in smaller sections as compared to other structural materials.
* As steel is a light weight material it can be handled easily and offers ease in transportation.
* As we know steel is a ductile material. It does not fail abruptly and suddenly like brittle materials and steel give ample warning by yielding before actual collapse of the structure.
* Due to large deformation and erection stress, steel does not fractures as it Hass hight strength.
* Steel is highly durable and it has a very long life if maintained properly.
* Steel can be reused also. It's resealed value is very high.
* Steel can be easily formed and rolled into various shapes and sizes.
* It is easy to detect any flaws when used in any structure and is easy to replace it also.
* Retrofitting of steel is also easy.
Example:-
Steel is used to make high and tall watch towers due to the property of steel has high strength to weight ratio.
So it is used to make tall structure as overall weight of steel is less as compared to it's length and offers good durability and lifetime to the structure.
2. As W14×82 has a weight of 82 lb/ft.
For 3'-6" which is equal to 3.5' wight equals to 82 lb/ft multiplies with 3.5' which gives 287 lb.
