Given a 150 mg sample of 1:1 (g/g) Benzophenone/2-iodobenzoic acid, how would you separate and purify them? Which solvents would you use?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Both compounds are organic compouns, they are soluble in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, DMF, THF, Acetone and DMSO but inslouble in water.
  • If u see those compound, one is compound containing carboxylic acid functional group other one is carbonyl group.
  • When carboxylic acid is treated with aqeous base such as Na2CO3 or NaHCO3, it generates the Na salt of carboxylic acid. whis is readily soluble in water.
  • The given two compound are separated using "Solvent Extraction Method" based on their solubilty.
  1. Transfer given sample to separating funnel and dissolve in ether or DCM.
  2. Add aq. Na2CO3 solution into separating funnel and shake vigorusly then stop and letf them alone. two layers will be formed in separating funnel. one is aeqous layer which contain 2-iodobenzoic acid and other one is organic layer, which containg benzophenone.
  3. separate the both layers then concentrate both of them separately.
