what the stationary phase and mobile phases are used in the Aldol condensation lab?
Question is not clear here for what purpose, purificatiion point of view or for separate aldol product.
But basic point is that aldol condensation takes place between an aldehyde/ketone which have at least one alpha hydrogenandproduct will be mixture of different aldol or we can use directive aldol using LDA then alpha hydrogen must be taken from less hindered side and beta-hydroxy carbonyl compound formed as a main product (one product).
For TLC, it is ascending technique we can use silica gelG as a stationary phase and mobile phase: dichloromethane: methanol: acetic acid(9:1: 1drop) and will be checked number of component using product mixture and reactant spots.
We can use preparative TLC, for separate the product, we will spotting (large amount) at origin and after visulization we will scratched out all productin a solvent containind beaker and filter it, we will get pure product.
For column,((Descending chromatography) we will take silica, coat with silica (st. phase),and product mixture( Concentrated form) also mashed with some amount of silica after dried it will be pouredon top of the column and mobile phase run with from loww polar hexane, dichloromethane, ester, acetone and alcohol to high polar and elute will be checked with TLC.
We can separate pure product from column chromatography.
