Explain with appropriate examples , how selection of construction machineries and equipment effect the construction project planning ?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Construction project planning always depends upon the level and the quality of the machineries and the equipments we are using :

There is a direct relationship of the quality of machineries to the various time events and the paths and the overall time of project which is the part of planning and management is required for the exection.

examples

1. Say for earthwork equipment selection there are various equipments like backhoe, roller compactors, dozers, dumpers and graders.

Now for a small work may be backhoe roller and compactors may do the job and no need for all equipments it will save cost and time of the project.

But on the other hand for a large project we need all the listed equipment it will increase the cost a bit but save a lot of time and overall provides efficiency.

So, Deciding factors are :

Quantities of material to be moved
The available time to complete the work the job
conditions.

The prevailing soil types, the swell and compaction factors, etc.

The job conditions including factors such as availability of loading and dumping area, accessibility of site, traffic flows and whether conditions at site.

2. For concreting equipments we can select among Concrete batching plant, concrete mixers, transit mixers and concrete pump.

Example if concreting of a building is to be done and we have all the equipments listed above then the as per planning we require skilled labour and less number foremans and the time of the activity is reduced.

On the other hand if we only the mixer and other jobs are to be done by labours than no need of skilled labour and we require more labour and foremans as a part of planning and the activity time will be longer.

And as per the site conditions we have to make the machinery to benifit plan for overall economy and know how much machinery required.

How to select equipments:

The decision will involve many issues that have to be analyzed. The following factors :

Site characteristics such as boundary conditions, noise limitations and other restrictions.
Equipment availability-local availability of equipment, whether the contractor owns that equipment.

3.Hoisting equipments: It involves Chain hoist crane, electric hoist crane, Tractor hoist crane

How to select :

Building Design- Building Height, Project Duration
Capability- Power Supply, Load Lifting Frequency, Operators Visibility

Safety- Initial planning and Engineering

Economy- Cost of move in, setup, and move out, Cost for rent, Productivity.

Site Conditions, Soil stability and ground conditions, Access road requirement and site accessibility, Operating clearance

example If we are constructing a small building and it doesn't require a crane at all for the lifting tasks but the owner wants the building to be constructed faster and ready for some extra cost then we can include it as a part of planning.

So all depends upon the actual site conditions, activities time and the cost.

Paccione Paving is considering purchasing a unique piece of equipment for a road construction project that will last five years. At the end of the five-year project, Paccione will no longer need the equipment. The equipment will cost $1,225,000, will be depreciated straight-line over seven years, and will be sold for $415,000 at the end of the project. The project will generate additional revenues of $750,000 with annual expenses of $165,000. The project will require an initial investment in net...
