Why do Senators have the ability to block hearings for Presidential appointments? Is this harmful or helpful for Democracy?
The Senate has always effectively guarded its power for the purpose of reviewing and approving or rejective the presidential appointees to the executive and other judicial branch posts. The same power is being provided to the Senate to approve or reject by a two-thirds vote because many framers of the US Constituition have explained that this power is required in the authority and to serve the purpose as an advisor for the President for better decision making process. After the Nomination has been made by President, the power is given to Senate to either approve or reject the President's appointments as this advice after the nomination play a crucial and useful role for better considering and control.
Yes, I do believe that Senate and the powers allocated to him are important and beneficial for the democracy because of the protection of the rights for the individual states and also for safeguarding the minority opinion into a government designed system to give greater and better powers to the national government and also for the upliftment to the democracy.
