This week our reading in the eText focuses on Safety, Health, Well-Being, and Security. Imagine that you are the CEO of a manufacturing plant with a wide variety of heavy equipment, machinery, and technology used to assemble the widgets you produce, which also involves some dangerous/toxic chemicals. You have 500 employees working for you. How would you go about providing a safe and secure work environment for your employees? What specific ways would you need to keep your employees safe and your plant secure? Where might you be tempted to cut corners and reduce costs, which could potentially put employees or your plant at risk? Feel free to share examples of good or bad safety and security practices from your work experience.
· I would provide safe and secure work environment for the employees by-
- Educating and training employees on safe work practices
- Reward employees to encourage safe behavior in the workplace.
- Use labels and signs on hazardous equipment or machinery
- Provide safety equipment for the employees
- Implement safety policies and protocols right from the day the employee joins the company.
· Specific ways to keep your employees safe and your plant secure are-
- Regular monitoring and reviewing of the safety practices
- Document incidents as they can be lessons learned
- Identify potential risks, assess them and take measures to mitigate/avoid them.
- Visual charts of potential risks and the consequences need to be put up around the plant to ensure employees adhere to safety measures.
- Do the drill regularly to prepare the employees to handle potential risks such as fire.
· I might be tempted to cut corners and reduce costs, which could potentially put employees or the plant at risk is in providing safety equipment and gear provided to the employees. If I cut costs by not providing the safety equipment to the employees, then it is a high threat for the employees’ safety though the costs are reduced.
· In my workplace, the good practices that my workplace adopts are performing regular drills to educate employees to handle unpredicted risks such as earthquake and fire, all policies and procedures are aligned with safety protocol.
