During 1890 to 1920 , it was a period of Progressive Era . There were social and political reform that aimed at a better and growing society .

In the progressive calls for reform , people had more control over their government through referendum . It gave power to people in the government and removed power from the hands of political bosses as it was in the traditional notions of government where powers where not in the hand of people.

The traditional notions were old fashioned as believed by the reformers . But with the introduction of progressive Era there was widespread social activism and political reforms.

The social issues that were raised in progressive Era were :

Rise of crime

poverty

indusralism

white slavery

The political issues :

Make government more responsive and effective and efficient.

Child labor and women's rights .

Women achieved the right to vote .

Protected of workers' rights

Consumers were strengthened.

It began with the social movement and eventually led to political movement.
